Cara pemanduan jimatkan petrol

APABILA dijemput menyertai Cabaran Lebih Nilai Media Shell (3-5 Mei) yang dilancarkan sempena kempen Skimming Stone dengan cogan kata ‘Lebih Kilometer Dengan Petrol Shell’, barulah penulis diuji untuk memandu dengan cara yang boleh menjimatkan minyak.

Lebih Kilometer dengan Petrol Shell diperkenalkan pada 2003 dan berdasarkan kajian pada 2004, sembilan daripada 10 pemandu yang menggunakan petrol Shell ketika ditemubual mengaku mereka mendapat lebih kilometer.

TANGKI kereta peserta ditutup dengan pelekat sepanjang tempoh Cabaran Lebih Nilai Media Shell selama tiga hari.

Sebelum cabaran bermula, peserta diberikan baucar RM50 untuk mengisi tangki kereta masing-masing dengan minyak Shell. Pada hari yang dinanti-nantikan pada 3 Mei, semua kereta peserta berkumpul di stesen minyak Shell yang terletak di antara Plaza Tol Subang dan Damansara Lebih Raya Lembah Klang Utara (NKVE).

Oleh kerana penulis sudah mengisi minyak Shell pada petang 30 April dan hingga 3 Mei tidak begitu banyak bergerak, maka di stesen minyak ini, tidak banyak minyak boleh diisi.

Penutup tangki kemudian ditampal dengan pelekat untuk memastikan hanya minyak dalam tangki kereta itu digunakan dan tidak ditambah.

Selepas Pengarah Urusan Shell Malaysia Trading, Mohzani Wahab, melepaskan kereta peserta, maka bermulalah cabaran saya.

Bagaimanapun, keadaan kerja tidak mengizinkan saya untuk menggunakan sepenuhnya minyak yang diisi ke dalam tangki. Ini kerana kerja lebih banyak dihabiskan masa di pejabat.

Maka berulanglah kereta antara rumah ke pejabat di Jalan Riong, Bangsar, sejauh kira-kira 36 kilometer atau 72 kilometer pergi dan balik. Dalam tempoh tiga hari itu, hanya sekali destinasi melencong, iaitu ke Kota Damansara.

Apabila tiba hari penamat, meter perbatuan di kereta mencatatkan sebanyak 216 kilometer. Dengan 12.92 liter yang digunakan sejauh itu, bermakna setiap satu liter membawa kereta penulis sejauh 16.7 kilometer.

Saya tidak tahu prestasi kereta lain. Mungkin ada yang lebih baik atau lebih teruk. Apa yang saya tahu semua peserta telah mencatatkan perbatuan sebanyak 1,760 kilometer.

Melalui program itu, setiap kilometer yang dicatatkan dalam pemanduan peserta bernilai RM4 dan akan disumbangkan kepada rumah amal. Berdasarkan keseluruhan perbatuan yang dicatatkan oleh peserta, maka jumlah derma yang dikumpulkan adalah sebanyak RM7,040. Bagaimanapun, Shell menambah jumlah derma itu hingga kepada RM20,000.

Berbalik kepada cerita rakan saya merungut sebelum ini, mungkin ada baiknya saya memberitahunya beberapa petua yang dipraktikkan sepanjang tempoh cabaran itu untuk menjimatkan penggunaan petrol, iaitu:

Memandu dengan tenang – Jangan gopoh dan membuat sesuatu secara mengejut.

Berat – Jangan bawa barang yang tidak perlu (kereta anda bukan stor). Penambahan berat sebanyak 50 kilogram meningkatkan penggunaan minyak sebanyak dua peratus).

Tayar – Tekanan angin mesti betul. Jika tidak, penggunaan minyak bertambah lima peratus.

Penyelenggaraan – Penalaan enjin yang teruk meningkatkan penggunaan minyak hingga lebih 50 peratus. Jangan malas pastikan palam pencucuh, tali kipas dan penapis udara diperiksa secara berkala.

Kelajuan – Lebih perlahan anda memandu, lebih jimat minyak digunakan (dan tidak disaman). Memandu melebihi 90 kilometer sejam (km/j) meningkatkan dengan ketara penggunaan minyak. Secara perbandingan, pada kelajuan 100 km/j, penggunaan minyak bertambah 10 peratus, 105 km/j (15 peratus) dan 110 km/j (25 peratus).

Jika kereta tidak bergerak, matikan enjin jika sekadar menunggu seseorang.

Penggunaan gear – Pilih gear yang sesuai dengan kelajuan. Menggunakan gear rendah untuk kelajuan tinggi menyebabkan pembaziran minyak kerana enjin menjadi lebih pantas. Jangan malu-malu menggunakan mod ‘ekonomi’ jika kereta anda memilikinya.

Brek – Jika anda sudah tahu di mana hendak berhenti, perlahankan kenderaan secara beransur-ansur. Jangan brek mengejut.

Perancangan – Rancang perjalanan untuk mengelakkan kesesakan lalu lintas. Ini menjimatkan masa, wang dan mengelakkan tekanan.

Minimum – Kurangkan perjalanan jarak dekat kerana ini meningkatkan penggunaan minyak sebanyak 40 peratus.

Kalau kawan saya membaca petua ini, cuba-cubalah mengamalkannya. Begitu juga dengan pembaca. Memang nanti akan ada orang kata ‘cakap bolehlah’. Bagaimanapun terpulanglah, tepuk dada tanya selera.

Jika anda hendak menjimatkan penggunaan minyak, cubalah dulu petua ini. Saya sudah mencuba, memang susah, tetapi apabila pemanduan berhemah dijadikan tabiat, hasilnya berbaloi!

Virus, salah guna internet masalah utama keselamatan

SERANGAN virus komputer (85 peratus), penyalahgunaan capaian internet (79 peratus) dan pencerobohan laman web (64 peratus) adalah masalah keselamatan kepada sistem rangkaian komputer yang dikenal pasti sebagai masalah utama keselamatan sistem rangkaian komputer.

Naib Presiden Majlis Antarabangsa Perunding Perdagangan Elektronik (EC-Council), Jay Bavisi, berkata keselamatan komputer amat penting kepada semua pihak kerana komputer kini tidak lagi boleh dipisahkan daripada kehidupan.

Sehubungan itu, katanya, pendidikan mengenai keselamatan teknologi maklumat dan komunikasi (ICT) adalah amat penting supaya individu dalam organisasi akan sedar dan faham dengan baik bagaimana melindungi semua maklumat atau data daripada diceroboh.

“Ini kerana alat penceroboh sistem rangkaian komputer kini semakin canggih dan kuat daripada segi kecekapan, peredaran, kerahsiaan, automasi dan keserasian pengguna dan alat itu dengan mudah dimuat turun daripada internet,” katanya di Kuala Lumpur, baru-baru ini.

Beliau berkata demikian pada seminar “Perang Siber: Jalan Ke Hadapan - Strategi Pertahanan Baru anjuran Program Pembangunan Bangsa-bangsa Bersatu (UNDP).

Beliau berkata, kelemahan keselamatan hos boleh dikenal pasti dengan alat pengimbas kerana keselamatan mana-mana rangkaian di dalam internet bergantung kepada keselamatan setiap rangkaian lain, jadi tiada rangkaian yang benar-benar selamat.

“Penceroboh sistem rangkaian komputer boleh merosakkan sistem kuasa dan mengganggu bekalan kuasa; mengeluarkan perkhidmatan darurat; berpotensi memasuki komputer pasaran saham dan merosakkan datanya; dan berpotensi sebenarnya merosakkan sistem kawalan trafik udara,” katanya.

Sementara itu, Penyelaras Bangsa-bangsa Bersatu, Richard Leete, merangkap wakil UNDP Malaysia, Singapura dan Brunei, berkata seminar itu bertujuan supaya orang ramai memahami mengenai keselamatan IT.

“Semua organisasi perlu dilengkapkan dengan keselamatan ICT bagi mengelakkan pencerobohan sistem rangkaian komputer. Pejabat di Malaysia tidak harus mengurangkan kepentingan langkah sekatan melindungi pertubuhan mereka dengan keselamatan IT kerana jika sesuatu pertubuhan diserang, ia akan menjadi masalah besar,” katanya.

Leete berkata, UNDP mempunyai banyak projek dan program untuk mendidik orang ramai berhubung keselamatan komputer.

When Is a Baked-Bean Can a Wi-Fi Network Antenna?

Is using an empty baked-bean can to grab a Wi-Fi signal from a mile away high technology? The answer is yes if you're an entrant in Intel's International Science and Engineering Fair being held this week in Phoenix.

Steven Buss, an 18-year-old Wi-Fi buff from Palm City, Florida, built three different types of antennas to see which provided the greatest range for his wireless network. The best performer, made from a "biquad" antenna and a used DirectTV satellite dish bought on EBay, picked up the wireless signal 1.3 miles away.

But the cheapest and easiest, the one he calls a "cantenna," made from an empty baked-bean can, let him connect to his 802.11b wireless network from almost as far--a mile away.

Buss ran his experiments using an IBM ThinkPad on a long, straight Florida road to avoid obstacles that can block a wireless signal.

Tired of getting into a cold car before work in the middle of winter? Marc Ingram's new invention lets you literally phone your car, punch in a six-digit password, and start warming up the auto while you finish breakfast.

The high school senior from Louisville, Kentucky, says the device he calls the AutoAttendant is a regular cell phone with a "big boosted antenna," so your car would have its very own phone number. The phone connects to the same type of automated voice router that businesses use.

That call router connects into the car's controls with a variety of wires, Ingram says. But you also could connect those wires to a home appliance, for example. Are you a worrywart traveler? Call home, press 4, and turn off the stove.

All three are competing with 1300 other young scientists from around the world at this week's Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.

The science fair, which ends May 14, will award $3 million in college scholarships, computers, internships, and other prizes as individual and team awards. Three finalists will walk away with scholarships worth $50,000.

Ingram and Messick say they are both working on obtaining patents, an expensive process that Ingram says may cost him over $10,000. They both plan to fine-tune their inventions, hoping to get them to the marketplace.

Turn your home into a streamyx hotspot

CYBERJAYA: Internet service provider TM Net Sdn Bhd has launched its “streamyx hotspot@home” broadband kit that includes a wireless access point with router and an ADSL modem.

The kit lets users connect to the Internet wirelessly without the need for local area network (LAN) wiring.

Users can also create a home network, although each computer on the network will require a WiFi access card. The wireless access point has a range of 200m outdoors and 100m indoors, TM Net said.

The do-it-yourself hotspot@home kit comes with the wireless access point, WiFi card, tmnet hotspot prepaid card worth RM19, user manual, set-up CD, RJ-45 and RJ-11 cables, splitter and an AC power supply adaptor.

Subscribers who need help to install the service will have to pay an RM88 fee.

Customers who do not want the WiFi card can opt for a USB 2.0 thumb-drive, which will be made available from May 15.

The kit is available for new subscribers of TM Net’s streamyx basic 512Kbps (kilobits per second) and streamyx basic 1Mbps (megabits per second) broadband service packages that do not include a modem.

The company is also throwing in three months free access to its BlueHyppo Melting Pot broadband channel, as well as a waiver on its RM75 streamyx activation fee.

The hotspot@home kit is currently selling for RM299, which is a discount from the regular RM621 retail price. The offer expires on July 31, TM Net said.

Datuk Baharum Salleh, TM Net Sdn Bhd chief executive officer, said: “We see a growing interest in wireless broadband at home, as home users are becoming more familiar with wireless Internet access at locations such as sidewalk cafes, shopping complexes and airports.”

The company also hopes to accelerate WiFi use at the more than 600 hotspot locations TM Net has nationwide with the introduction of the hotspot@home kit.

The Highest Priced Phone May Not Be the Best

The goal of every company is to maximize shareholder value. During the Internet boom, many companies were only looking for the quick payoffs. This short-term thinking caused many companies to be overvalued and over levered. So when the internet bubble burst, companies were not structured to sustain the downturn. As the economy starts to recover, companies are getting back to business basics, by maximizing shareholder value over the long-term. Recently, MCI’s Board maintained this core value.

Since early February 2005, Verizon and Qwest have been in a bidding war for MCI, the nation’s second-largest long-distance telephone carrier, after AT&T Corp. Qwest and Verizon each view MCI’s business as a critical piece to compete against the expected merger of SBC and AT&T. The MCI bidding first started with Qwest attempting a takeover bid for MCI. By February 10th, Verizon had entered the market for MCI. Within a week MCI’s board approved Verizon’s $20.35 per share offer, shunning Qwest’s higher bid in favor of what it believes are better business prospects with Verizon. This did not stop Qwest from trying to win over MCI shareholders because of its higher bid. Over the next three months, at least three new bids from Verizon and Qwest were reviewed by MCI board members.

On May 2, 2005, MCI’s Board accepted an enhanced offer from Verizon Communications Inc. MCI’s board has agreed to Verizon’s lower priced-offer mainly based on the current capital structure of Qwest. Qwest, based in Denver, is the fourth-largest local telephone company in the U.S., with a stock-market value of about $7 billion. It also has roughly $17.3 billion in debt, and the deal for MCI, of Ashburn, VA, is viewed as crucial to Qwest’s prospects. Qwest has been suffering local access line losses at nearly four per cent per year for the past several years. Qwest’s debt rating is similar to MCI, B2, which generally reflects operating struggles due to the intense competitive nature of the telecommunications industry. Moody’s believed a merger of MCI and Qwest would only work if redundant network costs were eliminated while also stabilizing top line revenue declines in both companies’ core businesses. The potential deal of Qwest/MCI would also create a levered company that would not be able to handle a downturn in the economy. With too many what concerns, MCI Board decided the Verizon deal would maximize shareholder value over the long-term.

The merger with Verizon will capitalize on the complementary strengths of the two companies and will create one of the world’s leading provider’s of global communication services. With more than $71 billion in annual revenues and a market value of about $99BN, Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ) is one of the world's leading providers of communications services. Verizon has a diverse work force of 214,000 in four business units: Domestic Telecom provides customers with wire line and other telecommunications services, including broadband. Verizon Wireless owns and operates the nation's most reliable wireless network, serving 45.5 million voice and data customers across the United States. Information Services operates directory publishing businesses and provides electronic commerce services. International includes wire line and wireless operations and investments, primarily in the Americas and Europe. MCI would be its fifth business unit focusing in the long distance market.

We believe that MCI’s Board made the right decision by accepting the Verizon deal. As companies determine who is a good partner, all aspects of the company and the business must be evaluated. Synergies are a major factor in determining if a company is a good fit. The nature of the telecommunications industry requires that effective competitors have financial strength and a full array of offerings. The financial strength was one of many factors in why MCI decided to choose Verizon. Another factor MCI was the reaction by current customers backing the deal with Verizon. The high leverage position of Qwest was a deterrent for MCI due to its uncertainty of sustainability in a downturn of the economy.

The one factor that is over looked in the deal is the consumer. As the telecommunications industry continues to consolidate, competition may lessen which could lead to price increases. The government could try to regulate this increased competition, but new government regulation started the furious rush of mergers. The government increased operating costs for long distance carriers, which is why many long distance companies are trying to merge to create synergies going forward.

Overall, MCI’s board has proven its worth by addressing all issues and deciding what they think is sustainable shareholder value and growth over the long-term. There are many issues that can affect the outcome, but at least the MCI’s board has started in the right direction, despite taking a discount now.

Long distance relationships? Make it work out!

For the time apart, why don't you keep a journal for it. Here, you may write in how much you love and miss your partner, what make you think of your partner, your dreams, etc…and when you two meet again, let them read all those words you've written in your journal. This will show your partner that him or her is always on your mind no matter how far the distance.

Emails are one of the ways you guys keep in touch. Save all those emails, bound them and give them to your mate as a gift when you guys are back together.

What you can do is make a chain out of construction paper with a special memory, quotation or funny story on each link. For each day you are apart with your partner, make sure there is one link for her or him to tear off. This will be like a daily reminder from you to your partner that your love him/her.

Give your partner a call once in awhile just to say how much you love her/him and how much you miss her/him.

Surprise your partner with random packages or mail. They will think it's sweet when they least expect to receive it.

Here are only few suggestions from me. Maybe you already have your own way and tips for your long distance relationships to work out. Still, you may add these ones for a change.

TIPS: How can you make "cyberdating" a safer and more rewarding experience?

• Be careful in telling your identity
  For a few of us, we don't easily reveal our true identity. But there are some others who are naively give out their phone numbers, address and other personal information. It is best for you to protect your identity when you are chatting online.
  
  
• Not everything you read is true
  We always heard "It's too good to be true". Almost every chatter in chat rooms tells only good and great stories about them. These stories may be true and they may also not be true. This is so very common as you want to give others the best first impression on yourself. Therefore, we are unlikely to tell the truth about ourselves.
  
  
• Take it slow
  After you chat online with someone, you are more likely to feel that you've known the other person like forever. This will create false sense of foundation, which often brings to heartbreaking consequences. In getting to know the other person, it is advisable to take your own time by taking it slow.

Cyberdating has become increasingly popular these days. It is one way for people to form new friendship with other people around the world. Though without precautions, this form of meeting and getting to know new people may get dangerous. Be aware of the possible risks and be extra careful when you want to chat online.

TIPS: How to woo your partner the easiest way!

It's just so easy to attract women - just be honest about what you feel, try to be attentive to what they say and what they feel. Women sure love intimacies!

Try to surprise him…call him at work and invite him on a date, or just tell him you love him.

Send HIM flowers for a change!

Put all those sweet memories together in picture. Arrange all those letters from HIM or HER together on a hard surface and get it framed. Every time you or your partner looks at it, this will give you both nice reminders.

Do something difference for a change - leave little love notes to her or him in various places for your partner to find throughout the day.

Hug her or him for no reason and tell them that you that love them in front of others. They sure will feel flattered.
